Posting compliments of Jackie Currington

Living out on an apple orchard farm, the only way I can see my beloved Detroit Tigers play baseball is on direct tv. Detroit is a few hundred miles away, and when the apples are growing, there isn't much time to be traveling away from the farm. When I was a kid, my dad and I would listen to Ernie Harwell broadcast the game live from Tiger Stadium. He was a quiet man, the sort of stoic farmer that populates the Midwest. It was one of the few times we would sit down together and talk about sports or anything else. Whether they won or lost, my dad and I would have a long talk about the game. Afterward, we'd go back to doing farm chores and not speaking much. Nowadays, my dad and I aren't living in the same house, but my wife and I still sit down to watch the Detroit Tigers. Ernie Harwell isn't broadcasting the games any more, and the Detroit Tigers are playing in Comerica Park now, but I'm still watching them aim for the World Series. When my wife and I have children of our own, I'll be sure to sit them down on game day and watch baseball together. Maybe that will be the only times they'll remember when they grow up and have children of their own.
