Miquel angel Jimenez beat Lee Westwood in a playoff to win the Omega Duabi Desert Classic.

Both Jimenez and Westwood ended the fourth round tied at 11 under par. Thongchai Jaidee finished third one stroke behind.

Edoardo Molinari and Martin Kaymer finished at 9 under par in a tie for fourth.

The Spaniard, a two-time runner-up at this event, said: "All week I've been playing strong with a strong mind and with good support from my caddie.

"I have been coming to Dubai for many years and had a few chances to win and now I have it, I feel very pleased and very happy."

"Like a good wine, with age, I get better and better," said Jiménez, who last tasted success at the 2008 BMW PGA Championship.

"I feel comfortable on the golf course - that is key. I am not 25 or 30, I have just turned 46 but I'm still healthy and still strong. Not like I was when I was 25, but still strong and I can still play the ball. And if I feel happy and can focus, then you can win."

"The writing was on the wall. Miguel plugs in the front, 99 times out of a 100 that goes back in the water," said Westwood following his 13th top ten finish in 16 events.

"And he's also one of the best bunker players on tour. He still plays one of his poor bunker shots, but holes out to stay in it. That's one of those things, play-offs can be like that."

Steve Stricker Wins Northern Trust Open

February 8th 2010 15:24

Steve Stricker shoots a four day total of 268 to win the Northern Trust Open by two strokes over Luke Donald.

Dustin Johnson was the leader after round one after firing an opening day 64. Johnson held on to the lead after round two with a two day total of 131. Steve Stricker took over after round three after firing a 66 and held off Donald for the win.

Dustin Johnson and JB Holmes would finish in a tie for third three strokes behind Stricker. Paul Goydos, Steve Marino, Andres Romero and George McNeill all finished at 10 under par six strokes behind Stricker in a tie for fifth.

"I just knew it was going to be hard," Stricker said after closing with a 1-under 70 for a two-shot victory over Luke Donald. "You're playing a different game than what you normally play. You played scared -- at least I did there for a while."

"If I got really hot with the putter, I could have maybe caught Steve," said Donald, who closed with a 66. "He played nicely coming down the stretch, and I think he was a deserved winner. But at least I gave him a little run for his money."

"My father-in-law always says there's a defining moment when you're going to win a golf tournament," Stricker said. "And I think that was it right there. It allowed me to keep a three-shot lead going into the last three holes."
